Interview – LIMESODA GLOBAL

Influence means the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behaviour of someone. In recent years, many companies are using this influence through video platforms (such as YouTube, Twitch, etc.). The number of this kind of marketing [with influencers] is increasing. In particular, the game industry is using various influencers to get closer to users and focus on communicating with them. »Netmarble (모두의마블), which produces a variety of game shows, met with the MCs of each show and listened to the truth from their point of view.

The third part of the interview is with Seungji and Hyerim, members of Limesoda, the girl group with a lot of charms! The YouTube channel ‘모두의마블TV’ has been broadcasting for nearly half a year now, a live coupon show called <모마핫타임>. Even the users of ‘모두의마블TV’ who were watching to enjoy the game were fascinated by Limesoda’s Hyerim and Seungji’s charms! We met these two girls with fresh charms!

Q. What kind of group is Limesoda?

SEUNGJI: Limesoda is short for »Light Me So Dazzly.» It means that we and our fans will meet and shine together. The greeting is a signature with a shiny hand gestures.

HYERIM: We’re currently working on an album with our own color and practicing our vocals and rap skills all the time. We’re trying to become the best in those fields. If we showed a refreshing image for the first single album, the second one feels like a grown-up older sister? (Laughing) In this third single album, a new member joined us to showcase the unique charm of Limesoda.

SEUNGJI: Actually, there are a few fun facts about our new member, Jangmi. She was originally our dance instructor. We met her as students, and we insisted that we stay together. She’s finally joined us as a member who will be with us forever.^^

Q. You have a busy schedule; from web dramas to MCs of a game show as well as your own music. Do you have any self-managing tips?

HYERIM: Going on a diet? (laughs). Since it’s a job in which you are constantly on the public eye , you have to maintain your figure. As a singer, choreography and singing practice is basic.

SEUNGJI: I also take care of my physical health. Since all of the members have different body types, we tend to work out doing exercises such as muscle strength and aerobics.

Q. Is there any activity that Limesoda wants to do?

HYERIM: I’d like to do many things. I want to go to variety shows and to have our own reality show.

SEUNGJI: We haven’t had a fan meeting yet. There are a lot of things we want to do. We want to communicate more with our fans.

Q. What’s the program you present on ‘모두의마블’ about?

HYERIM: It’s about giving out coupons and play fun games for users who enjoy ‘모두의마블’ program twice a week. We don’t have many opportunities to be MCs and it’s also a new experience, so we hope the viewers enjoy us as much as we’re enjoying being the MCs of this show.

SEUNGJI: At first, I was very nervous, but now I feel comfortable and relaxed. Every time we shoot <모마핫타임>, the mini-game is different so I’m always looking forward to it. I’m always thinking about different ways of making them more fun.

Q. It’s already been half a year since you started as MCs on <모마핫타임>. Is there any difference?

HYERIM: During <모마핫타임>, I found a new field that I wanted to try. I wanted to do a radio show because it was fun. (laughs)

SEUNGJI: That’s right. Since we talk a lot during the live broadcast, I feel a bit more experienced. (Laughs). At the beginning, when I made mistakes, I used to get a little bit embarrassed. But these days, if I make any mistake, I deal with it more naturally.

HYERIM: In the past if something went wrong during a live broadcast the staff members would say, «What?» and we were confused and embarrassed. Now, we can take the time to understand the situation and fix the mistake. (laughs)

Q. Do you remember any memorable moments while filming <모마핫타임>?

SEUNGJI: Can I talk about this? (laughs) There was a time when we sang our songs one by one, and apparently the microphones were not working well. so the writer told us to start again. Turns out the micorphones were off and we were singing like nothing.

HYERIM: Honestly! When you make one mistake from the beginning, it feels like you’re making a lot. There was a day where we made a mistake while reading the script, and the PD and writer knew. It’s funny the way we were looking at each other. For example, a piece of paper would fall from the script or the thing we need to read doesn’t appear on the screen. These days… (she smiles).

Q. Since it’s a live show, I’m sure you’ll be nervous. How do you manage to calm down before the show?

HYERIM: I’m more worried because I don’t feel that much tension anymore. At first, I tried to cheer myself up during rehearsals, but when I did, I got tired. So these days, if the tension is low, I tend to do my best during rehearsals and during live broadcasts. Now! Let’s do this show for 30 minutes! It’s like, «It’s fun today,» and you’re going to have to say, «Today’s fun,» and the crew is going to have fun.

SEUNGJI: I have lot of stamina saved in advance, but I feel like I’m going to burst during a live broadcast. (Laughs) Hyerim always cheers me up.

Q. Is there any new section you want to do in <모마핫타임>?

HYERIM: I remeber appearing on <모마라이브톡> , another live program on 모두의마블TV and I remember having so much fun on the phone interview and with the viewers. There were many unexpected questions. I really think that’s the beauty of a live show. I want to do it again. We’re also doing <모마핫타임> offline.

SEUNGJI: I think we’d have to work really hard if we had such a segment. (laughs)

Q. If you could become a character of ‘모두의마블’ what skills would you have?

HYERIM: Actually, I prefer the »Dark Nirvana» character’s visual rather than its skill. (Laughing). ‘모두의마블’ always makes good characters, but even when a character with good skills comes out, I don’t know how why but I always choose the one with the best visuals.

SEUNGJI: That’s right. The »Singer Queen» who came out this time was so pretty that she fell in love with it. (Laughs).

Q. What is ‘넷마블’ for Limesoda?

HYERIM: Doraemon’s all-round pocket! We make games, present new characters, and we keep getting and showing something new. I think it’s great. ‘모두의마블’ updates the game twice a week… I think I’d get a headache if I had to come up with something new every week. (laughs)

SEUNGJI: I think it’s mysterious and unpredictable. When we’re on <모마핫타임>, there’s a unique concept and there’s a new game every time. It’s amazing and I’m looking forward to the next one.

Q. Lastly, please say something to the fans and viewers of <모마핫타임>.

SEUNGJI: It’s refreshing to hear that we’ve been presenting <모마핫타임> for half a year already. (Laughing) First of all, I want to continue to communicate with the fans who love Limesoda. For those of you who enjoy ‘모두의마블’, thank you for having a great time with us.

HYERIM: We will continue to have more fun so we can make good memories. We hope you’ll have a good time and keep having fun with Limesoda!

K-pop artists are constantly growing by building their own stories, but they are in the dilemma of showing clear concepts and various charms. The exploitation of the idol market has led to criticism from people who constantly criticize idols for changing their concepts.

Recently, many idols who grow with the public’s attention have appeared. Among them, Limesoda is representative of a growing idol group recognized for its uniqueness and charm, with each album making a dramatic turnaround.

In this interview, we will review growing idol groups through an interview with girl group Limesoda.

Infinite growth of groups and music

Limesoda along with the slogan »Light Me So Dazzly», is a girl group that debuted in July 2017. Based on the growing group concept, they started out as a duo consisting of K-pop star Season 6 runner-up Hyerim and Seungji, and became a three-member group with the addition of the dancer-turned-idol Jangmi earlier this year, showing their unique recruitment of additional members.

This can be interpreted as a driving force behind Limesoda’s dramatic display of each member’s charm and at the same time, the change in their musical tendencies and the ability to satisfy popular tastes at the same time.

«Hyerim has always been a proud, bright, and energetic member since I first met her,» said Seungji. In addition, »Jangmi is coming up with a variety of ideas that we had never thought of before. The current members are making Limesoda more attractive,» she said.

Hyerim said, «With the addition of Jangmi, the choreography seems to have been upgraded along with the music. «When I have a hard time on my own, I can talk to her without hesitation and get some advice. I think it will be an opportunity for the members’ union to show a variety of charms.»

«With Hyerim, who has a bright charm and Seungji who has a warm personality, we can say we are a group with a variety of charms. We want to be widely loved as we add one more member in the future,» member Jangmi said.

Transformative Music Concept

Limesoda’s image as a growing group is also well illustrated in their new single album. Following their debut single «ZZZ», which was close to the concept of a vibrant duet, Limesoda is clearly shifting its appeal. From «All Eyez On Me,» which features a more tropical sound, to «WAVE,» a new album that appropriately harmonizes »soft» and girl crush.

In particular, the new song «WAVE», is a Mumbaiton-based dance hall song and naturally incorporates a refreshing feel like the group’s name suggests and adds a dynamic performance that moves between smoothness and the cheerfulness of EDM sounds.

«The new song, «WAVE,» is based on the theme of growing emotions between lovers, and is composed of both music and performance. «Like the performance and sound composition that continues without a break, Limesoda’s music growth continues, and we intend to reach out to many people.» Hyerim said.

«The new song, »WAVE,» is a compilation of everything from music to clothing. We tried to discuss this with the choreographer to make this dance possess an unordinary charm,» Seungji said.

Jangmi added »Fans and the general public are also saying that »WAVE» is fresh and that it is like a song made by Limesoda. We’d like to come up with an album that makes you wonder about our concept in the future,» he said.

We want to have a strong appeal like Mamamoo

Limesoda is strengthening their image as a group that actually shows what artists, including idol groups, say about the «denial of mediocrity.» In particular, unlike the recent trend of girl group growth, which seeks to grow stably while solidifying on a basic frame, there is a big difference in its emphasis on generating uniqueness as it has a stronger base than existing girl groups.

They also seem to admire Mamamoo, group loved for its cheerfulness and solid fundamentals. During the interview, the Limesoda members expressed their willingness to, like their role models Mamamoo, have their own color.

«As we also have the concept of showing a colorful side, I admire Mamamoo’s diverse and varied performance instead of just insisting on a formal stage.»

«Personally, my role model has been ‘Ariana Grande’ since my debut,» Hyerim said. »Rather than the music concept, I feel a lot of pleasure on being on stage itself, and I feel very attracted to the way I empathize with many people. When you focus on me only, you’ll see I lack a lot in eveything, including my vocals, but I want to work hard and empathize with the public through various concepts» Hyerim explained.

Seungji said, «I think Hwasa’s senior is really charming. Of course, I want to be an artist who has my own style and color. I still think I’m a little short when it comes to that physical strength, but I’m trying to make up for it.» Seungji said.

Jangmi said «All artists are role models for me. They all believe that they should work hard to find their place and charm, and they think it is most important that they display their charm with clarity. I’m still not good at singing because my focus have been on performing (dancing) for many years. We will continue to work hard to stand on our own feet.»

Lastly, the members said, «In the future, we want to be a group that can perform on any stage with a changing concept. I hope we can communicate with fans in Korea and abroad (Hyerim, Seungji).»We are a group called Limesoda, who will make you curious and will satisfy your taste in the future,» Jangmi said.
